Led Zeppelin has been credited with being as influential in the 1970’s as the Beatles had been in the 1960’s. As the group toured in 1969, writing songs in between concerts and the recording tracks on the road in studios throughout North America they created an album that would be one of the most influential albums of rock and roll history. “Led Zeppelin II”, considered by many to mark the starting point of heavy metal, met with great critical success and is still ranked high on most “best album of all time “ lists. Despite the piece meal approach in which this album was created, ”Led Zeppelin II” had great commercial success reaching the number one chart position in both the US and the UK. “Led Zeppelin II” is also one of the best selling albums of all time.
In 1970,“Led Zeppelin II” was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of “best album package” for its innovative album cover. The art work was created by air brushing the faces of the four band members onto a WWI photograph of the famed Flying Circus led by Manfred Von Richthofen, also known as the “Red Barron”. This image was then placed in front of a more stylized version of the Hindenburg image used on the first Led Zeppelin album
